Allied Health Assistance

What is an “Allied Health Assistant”?

An allied health assistant (AHA) will work with your child and family to deliver supports that have been identified and outlined by your Occupational Therapist. The allied health assistant will be fully trained and guided by your OT at all times to provide the tailored support that you need, and they can feed back their observations to your OT to maximise the effectiveness of your therapeutic supports.

Your allied health assistant might help with:

  • Fine motor skill development
  • Gross motor skill development
  • Daily living skill development
  • Community access support
  • Executive functioning skill development
  • Practicing the use of tools and visuals developed by your OT

This may allow your child and family to receive a higher frequency of supports than with your OT alone, and may help you to reach your goals faster.

The allied health assistant will also be helping to run the RiverRun Group programs. This will increase the amount of supports available for coaching in these sessions and maximise the therapeutic benefits for every child.

Can I claim the cost of an AHA session on NDIS?

Absolutely.

Can I claim the cost of AHA sessions on Medicare?

Unfortunately not at this point. We will keep you updated if this changes.

How can I access AHA support?

You can discuss whether this service provision option is suitable for you with your current OT. If you are new to RiverRun, an OT will complete any initial assessment of your child and family’s needs, and make a plan with you from there.

If you have any questions about how AHA supports work, please do not hesitate to be in contact with us.
